Standards for Traumatic Brain Injury

Right Care, Provider and Time

The goal of setting standards of care for people with brain injury is to ensure people have the right care, delivered at the right time, from the right provider. Quality of care can vary across the province, the standards for brain injury care guide the care journey to make sure all Ontarians receive the same level of care regardless of their location.

Standards for Post-Concussion Care

Right Care, Right Time, Right Provider

The Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation released Standards for Post-Concussion Care to fill a gap and support people in Ontario who have sustained concussion. These standards were developed with the involvement and expertise of over 65 experts, including individuals who had experienced persistent symptoms following concussion. The standards offer 15 criteria and several tools and resources to guide healthcare providers and interdisciplinary clinics in processes used to provide care. The standards have created a framework to support having the right care, delivered at the right time, by the right provider.

Standards for the Rehabilitation of Adults with Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury

The Ontario Neurotrauma Foundation created a report to raise awareness among healthcare providers, patients and families about the standards of care people should receive after a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI).

The Standards for the Rehabilitation of Adults with Moderate to Severe Traumatic Brain Injury address three significant gaps in the Ontario Health system:

  • The types of rehabilitation care and services available are not the same across Ontario.
  • After a TBI, a person can receive care from many difference healthcare providers in hospital, rehabilitation and/or community settings; there is a need for guidance about how care should be coordinated.
  • People with a TBI and there families don't always know what to do after a TBI and what type of care to expect.

The standards are about helping people with TBI get the right care, from the right provider at the right time.
