Summary of research program:

My professional objective is to advocate for increasing the opportunity for people to access structured physical activity and risk factor modification programs following stroke. My research interests are to examine the dose-response relationship between exercise and health related outcomes in people with stroke and cardiac disease. Using novel exercise training methods and combinations of exercise strategies my aim is to determine an exercise treatment aimed at promoting long-term health, repairing the brain and restoring lost mobility after stroke. I was chosen as a World Heart Federation (WHF) Emerging Leader and participated in a think tank in China in July 2018. The goal of the WHF is to reduce premature mortality from stroke and other cardiovascular diseases globally by at least 25% by 2025.

How has the pandemic affected you and your team?

  1. Funding cut of 20% of remainder of Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada grant (received some of this back)

  2. Published a paper on effects of COVID-19 on Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs
  3. Creation of Stroke Online Web Based Platform
  4. Cancellation of two, one day workshops that I was leading for clinicians and health care professionals
  5. Cancellation of a conference I was to present at
  6. Transition from a repeated-measures, interventional study being conducted by my MSc student, Elizabeth Whyte, to a cross-sectional study.
  7. Transitioned a funded study for my MSc student, Xiao Wei Du, from a longitudinal observational study, to publication of a protocol paper, and a database analysis.
  8. Was able to take on two professional master’s students from Kinesiology to work on a project remotely.
  9. Redeployment of research staff was helpful financially
  10. Redeployment of clinical staff resulted in inability to continue with the clinical program I coordinate
  11. I was appointed as the CRDL, which represented a time requirement of a .5 FTE given that we did not re-hire a research coordinator. I was happy to be able to help to re-start research studies at Cardiac Rumsey. Clinical staff were extremely helpful and supportive of research restart.

  1. Creation of “Stroke Online” a Web-based Exercise and Risk Factor Modification Program (Released June 5, 2020)

Welcome to Stroke Online | Cardiac College (healtheuniversity.ca)

Stroke Online provides a program for people who had a stroke event and want to stay active and healthy. The information on the web-based platform can help people start an exercise program and make lifestyle changes for better health. This is the first program of its kind offered in an online format for people after a stroke.

Analytics reveal that in the first 10 months of release, 3,198 people have accessed Stroke Online.

  1. Brain Health Support Program (November 2020-current):

Created the module entitled: Exercise after Stroke and Heart Disease (Chapter 2) for the clinical trials platform of the Canadian Consortium for Neurodegeneration and Aging (CCNA). This is an on-line program designed to help people with chronic disease follow a healthy life style. I created a 10-minute video presentation on the benefits of exercise, how to start exercise, and precautions for people with stroke or coronary artery disease.  The program will soon be released to the general public.

  1. Editorial Board member for Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and Prevention (JCRP) (2017 to present)
    • Write editorials on selected manuscripts
    • Write review papers when requested (See publications)
    • Review 6 manuscripts per year
    • Attend Editorial Board meetings
    • Act as a spokesperson for JCRP
    • Attend Editorial Meetings
  1. Infographic (August 2020)

I created an Infographic released by the American Association of Cardiovascular Prevention and Rehabilitation (AACVPR) “Integrating People with Stroke in Cardiac Rehabilitation”. The release of the infographic on social media coincided with a presentation I delivered at the AACVPR annual meeting.

  1. Infographic (June 2020)

Published in Journal of Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation and PreventionIntroducing the HL-PIVOT Network: Promoting Human Resilience and quality of Life through Healthy Living Initiatives.”

Workshop Presentations

  1. March 2020: Was scheduled to deliver a workshop (cancelled owing to COVID-19), training and support for the Southwest Ontario Stroke Network to open a facility that will provide exercise and risk factor modification programming for people recovering from a stroke.
  1. April 2020:  Scheduled (cancelled owing to COVID-19) to deliver a 1-day workshop sponsored by the Central East Stroke Network. Prescribing aerobic and resistance training to people following stroke:  Markham Ontario

  • Re-organize methods and standard operating procedures for every returning or new study to fit with the modified virtual cardiac rehabilitation program.
  • Meeting with front office administrative staff, laboratory staff, physicians, and researchers to ensure appropriate communication for each study.
  • Track patient and researcher visits and report all visits at safety huddle every morning and at CRDL weekly meetings (discontinued attending meetings 1 year post-start of COVID).
  • Review and monitor safety procedures including appropriate PPE with trainees and researchers.
  • Manage any problems (e.g. research participants who screen positive on COVID-19 pre-screening).
  • Ensure there is no overlap between research participants and clinical patients that would compromise safety (i.e. overcrowding).
  • Order research PPE when needed.
