Why I Rally: Dr. Jennifer Campos

Dr. Campos utilizes virtual reality in her research to understand and prevent falls among older adults

On Sunday, September 8, 2024 the University Health Network will host its annual Rally for Rehab fundraiser presented by BMO at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute’s Rumsey Centre.

Attendees will hear incredible stories of perseverance from former Toronto Rehab patients who overcame life-altering injuries; engage in family-friendly activities like face painting; and participate in a brisk walk to support critical care at Toronto Rehab and life-changing research at the KITE Research Institute.

The “Why I Rally” series highlights the motivations of scientists, clinicians, and healthcare professionals participating in this crucial fundraiser.

We’ve connected with KITE Associate Director - Academic and Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Multisensory Integration and Aging Dr. Jennifer Campos to discuss why she’s participating in Rally for Rehab.

Why are you participating in the 2024 Rally for Rehab?

Raising funds to support rehabilitation research is crucial as it drives innovation and advances in prevention, diagnostics, and treatments. Which ultimately enhances the quality of life for those who have experienced, or are at risk of, illness or injury and their families.

I, like many, have experienced a death in my family due to a preventable fall. Finding ways to prevent this from happening to others, through novel research approaches, is a major personal motivator.

What is your primary area of research at KITE?

I study how sensory health (vision and hearing) supports brain health, mobility, and quality of life in older adults. Sensory loss is highly prevalent in older adults and poses serious risks for major health conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases (dementia) and preventable injuries (e.g., falls or vehicle collisions).

Our research uses advanced virtual reality and simulation technologies to understand the mechanisms underlying these risks and how to prevent them.

What members of the community are most likely to benefit from this work?

Supporting healthy older adults in the community to stay active and connected, with good quality of life. In particular, enhancing the well-being of older adults with sensory loss including hearing loss, vision loss (e.g. due to stroke, eye disease), and those at risk of cognitive decline or dementia.

Who will you be rallying with this year?

I will be rallying with my 9 and 12-year-old sons, my husband, and our mini-sheepadoodle. We will be rallying alongside the amazing MIVELab Mobilizers team!

How important are fundraising events such as this one?

Without this support knowledge and innovations cannot be advanced at the pace, or with the level of sophistication, that is required to make real impact for those in need, now and in the future. The galvanizing effects of having a large, passionate community rallying together around this vital cause cannot be overstated.
