Esther Oostdyk and Bing Ye named winners of 2023 Unsung Hero award

Annual award recognizes the contributions of KITE staff members who have directly contributed to the Institute’s success

Esther Oostdyk, administrative assistant, and Bing Ye, Intelligent Assistive Technology and Systems Lab (IATSL) research manager, have been named co-recipients of the 2023 Unsung Hero Staff Recognition Award.

The annual award recognizes individuals or groups at KITE who have assisted in nurturing a positive corporate culture and whose work helps the Institute’s research teams operate more effectively.

Despite facing organizational upheaval in KITE’s financial department this year, Oostdyk stepped up to guide a smooth transition to a new software, while also managing a new set of responsibilities.

“I truly appreciate this recognition from my colleagues,” said Oostdyk. “This year has been a big adjustment, so it means a lot to me that my coworkers recognized that I handled it well.”

Ye was named an Unsung Hero for helping to create an environment where researchers feel supported, valued, and encouraged to excel. Ye has organized and hosted numerous social events, including holiday gatherings and monthly lab get-togethers.

“I am truly honored to receive the Unsung Hero Staff Recognition Award,” said Ye. “This award is not just a recognition of past efforts but an inspiration for future contributions.”
