Abstract

Dr. Kalsi-Ryan will review the activities of the Rocket Family Upper Extremity Clinic located at Lyndhurst Centre, she will share the model of the clinic that is operated as a revenue stream for KITE. How can such a role attract industry, and how can a research institute ensure there is adequate remuneration. She will further discuss her experience with commercialization from the point of view as the inventor and the challenges we face as scientists in defining ourselves as academics and entrepreneurs. Summarizing with opportunities for us to move towards sustainable research models.

Biography

Dr. Kalsi-Ryan is a Clinician Scientist in the field of upper limb assessment and recovery and spine pathology at KITE Research Institute-UHN, Lyndhurst Centre and is also Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, Department of Physical Therapy. Her research is oriented to establishing methods to quantify neurological change after injury and studying neuro-restorative methods to enhance and optimize function for those with neurological impairment. Her current role is as the PI of the Upper Extremity Neuro-Restorative Innovations Lab and lead of the Rocket Clinic-North. She defines herself as one who works at the inter-section of discovery and commercialization. Her role is to continue building a strong research foundation that will propel the clinic, while enhancing access to care for patients with SCI, and implementing new innovations and technologies. The Rocket clinic is a revenue generating enterprise which falls under the umbrella of KITE. Dr. Kalsi-Ryan provides academic teaching within the Neurosurgical Resident training and Physical Therapy programs at the University of Toronto. She is the founder of her own company, which manufactures the GRASSP and acts as a consultant for neurological trials worldwide. Her interests include: outcome measurement, upper limb recovery, traumatic and non traumatic SCI, quantification of neurological disorders, commercialization of technology and rehabilitation.
