Dr. Emily Nalder received the Dr. Patty Rigby Award for Early Career Excellence in Supervision at RWI Research Day

KITE affiliate scientist Dr. Emily Nalder received the Dr. Patty Rigby Award for Early Career Excellence in Supervision and Mentorship award at the University of Toronto’s Rehabilitation Science Institute (RSI) Research Day this year.

The award celebrates outstanding contributions to the training and experience of graduate students at RSI.

"This award is particularly meaningful as Dr. Patty Rigby was a very important colleague and friend,” said Dr. Nalder, who is a member of the Acquired Brain Injury & Society team at KITE, an assistant professor in the department of Occupational Science & Occupational Therapy at UofT, and a Canada Research Chair (Tier 2) in Resiliency and Rehabilitation.

"She was an extremely accomplished educator, researcher, and a generous mentor. I am both humbled and honoured to receive this award,” said Dr. Nalder.

Dr. Nalder was nominated for this award by her students Amy Nesbitt and Alexandra Thompson.

"Apart from being an incredible mentor, Dr. Nalder approaches her students with kindness and provides individualized support based on their unique goals and interests," said Nesbitt, a third-year PhD candidate at RSI.

Both Nesbitt and Thompson attribute their own success at earning scholarships, awards, and publications to Dr. Nalder's guidance in shaping their writing and communication skills.

“She is the epitome of kindness and understanding, which instilled confidence in me to pursue my PhD,” said Thompson, a fourth-year PhD Candidate at RSI.
