The public will get a chance to see the cutting-edge labs on May 24 and 25.
On May 24 and 25, Doors Open Toronto will allow the public to get a rare peek into the labs at UHN's KITE Research Institute. Thousands of people are expected to visit the Challenging Environment Assessment Lab (CEAL) and its unique simulation labs, including one encompassing a car, one with an ice floor that tilts 15 degrees, and a multisensory 365-degree replica of a Toronto streetscape.
The Institute will be open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. It is one of 150 locations participating in the Doors Open event, alongside organizations like the MaRS Discovery District and parts of the University of Toronto.
The CEAL simulation laboratories are some of the world's most advanced rehabilitation research labs. KITE researchers use them to prevent injuries and improve accessibility by changing the built environment, testing the effectiveness of assistive devices and footwear, understanding how perception affects other abilities, and creating new screening tools and pharmaceutical drugs.
The research from these real-world simulation labs leads to real-world solutions, helping people live independently and flourish, whether they're disabled, recovering from an injury, or aging in place.
