Why I Rally: Dr. Behrang Keshavarz

Dr. Keshavarz's research focuses on human perception and performance in virtual environments

On Sunday, September 8, 2024 the University Health Network will host its annual Rally for Rehab fundraiser presented by BMO at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute’s Rumsey Centre.

Attendees will hear incredible stories of perseverance from former Toronto Rehab patients who overcame life-altering injuries; engage in family-friendly activities like face painting; and participate in a brisk walk to support critical care at Toronto Rehab and life-changing research at the KITE Research Institute.

The “Why I Rally” series highlights the motivations of scientists, clinicians, and healthcare professionals participating in this crucial fundraiser.

We’ve connected with KITE Senior Scientist Dr. Behrang Keshavarz to discuss why he’s participating in Rally for Rehab.

Why are you participating in the 2024 Rally for Rehab?

Rehabilitation is often not at the forefront when we think of healthcare services, even though it is essential for recovery from illness or injury. I will be participating in Rally for Rehab to raise awareness among my family friends, and community about the importance of rehabilitation research and the work that we do at KITE and Toronto Rehab.

What is your primary area of research at KITE?

My research focuses on human perception and performance in virtual environments. Virtual Reality technologies offer fascinating opportunities for novel solutions in the healthcare and rehabilitation sector. Optimizing these technologies to ensure the users’ well-being and comfort, for instance by minimizing side-effects associated with motion sickness, is one of my research goals.

What members of the community are most likely to benefit from this work?

VR technologies have gained tremendous popularity in research, rehabilitation, training, and entertainment with millions of Canadian users. Unfortunately, side-effects such as nausea or headache are common and can affect everyone, making motion sickness one of the main barriers that VR technologies need to overcome. My research aims to optimize VR technology to ensure an immersive and enjoyable experience for all users.

Who will you be rallying with this year?

This year, I will be rallying with my son and (probably) with one of his stuffies 😊. In addition, the wonderful members of my research team will support and join Rally for Rehab!

How important are fundraising events such as this one?

Fundraising events like Rally for Rehab are a key element in supporting our work at KITE and Toronto Rehab. Through fundraising events like this, we not only raise awareness for the relevance of rehabilitation research, but we also gain direct support for our mission to provide outstanding rehabilitation services to the community.
