Why I Rally: Dr. Alison Novak

Dr. Novak's research has led to changes to the National Building Code of Canada and Canadian accessibility standards.

On Sunday, September 8, 2024 the University Health Network will host its annual Rally for Rehab fundraiser presented by BMO at Toronto Rehabilitation Institute’s Rumsey Centre.

Attendees will hear incredible stories of perseverance from former Toronto Rehab patients who overcame life-altering injuries; engage in family-friendly activities like face painting; and participate in a brisk walk to support critical care at Toronto Rehab and life-changing research at the KITE Research Institute.

The “Why I Rally” series highlights the motivations of scientists, clinicians, and healthcare professionals participating in this crucial fundraiser.

We’ve connected with KITE Senior Scientist  Dr. Alison Novak to discuss why she’s participating in Rally for Rehab.

Why are you participating in the 2024 Rally for Rehab?

I am participating in Rally for Rehab because I know that the research that we do at KITE Research Institute makes a huge difference in making Canada a more inclusive, accessible, and safe place to live. Funds for Rally for Rehab supports our research.

What is your primary area of research at KITE?

My research focuses on understanding safe and accessible design of homes and public spaces for people with disabilities and those wanting to age-in-place. My laboratory research is translated to inform national policies of the built environment.

What members of the community are most likely to benefit from this work?

My research program benefits people with disabilities and our aging population.

Who will you be rallying with this year?

This year I will be rallying with all members of KITE Research Institute to raise funds for rehabilitation research.

How important are fundraising events such as this one?

Raising funds for rehabilitation research is critical for supporting the Scientists at KITE Research Institute who work to advance knowledge, and address complex challenges in rehabilitation. Supporting the Rally for Rehab event represents a proactive investment in healthcare innovation and the well-being of populations affected by rehabilitation needs.
