Dr. Hadis Zarrin is an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at Ryerson University and the Director of Nano-Engineering laboratory for Energy and Environmental Technologies (NLEET). She holds a PhD in Chemical Engineering from University of Waterloo with 11-year experience of nanostructured materials development for electrochemical energy storage and sensing devices. Currently her research is focused on the design and engineering of smart multifunctional nanostructures and nanocomposites for clean energy storage and conversion, wearable biosensor systems, smart coatings, and environmental remediation. Her achievements have resulted in five awards, one patent, three book chapters, and >18 peer-reviewed published papers in prestigious journals with >1200 citations to date. Notably, she was the first researcher that engineered the chemical structure of graphene oxide (GO) to overcome the durability challenges of electrolytes in electrochemical systems like fuel cells and alcohol sensors. Published in The Journal of Physical Chemistry C with >368 citations to date, this work globally inspired other researchers and companies to collaborate with NLEET and use the graphene-analogous nanostructures and multifunctional materials as booster components in different applications including energy-storage devices, gas and chemical sensors, smart coatings, and smart healthcare wearables.
