Prof Michael Garton leads a biomedical engineering lab at the University of Toronto focused on integrating generative AI, synthetic biology, and human stem cells, toward the development of gene and cell therapies. Example projects include co-opting genes from animals that live in extreme environments to make human ‘super cells’; building a prime editing recorder that permanently records cellular events into human genomic DNA; using generative AI to create new species/serotypes of viral vectors for nonimmunogenic gene delivery; building the human olfactory system ex vivo linked to an artificial neural network; designing CNS neurons that can autonomously recognize injury and regenerate axons; building biologics factories out of human tissue that can be engrafted to sense and respond to disease.
