Abstract

Assistive technology is considered a universal need that can support participation and inclusion of persons of all ages and abilities in all aspects of life. Assistive technology refers to the diversity of technology that can help with daily living and activity participation, which involves products (e.g. devices, software) and services related to AT delivery such as assessment, training, and follow-up. Common products include wheelchairs, hearing aids, communication devices, or mobile computers. Our research shows that the system of assistive technology access in Canada is characterised by high complexity, lack of integration, access barriers and inequities, coverage disparities, and unmet needs. The objectives of this session are the following: (1) Present an overview of our research involving assistive technology users, policymakers, and other stakeholders, and (2) Discuss key findings from our research, including opportunities for policy action and the creation of a national strategy. Time will be allocated for audience members to discuss the potential implications of a national strategy on their own lives or work, and to reflect on the changing demands for rehabilitation services and assistive technology access in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic.
