This talk will cover the connection between spinal cord injury (SCI) and pain; evidence for the effectiveness of pain self-management education for clients with SCI; a Pain Management Group (PMG) designed specifically for clients with SCI and other neurological conditions; the results of a research project that evaluates the effectiveness of this treatment program; and practice tips for working with pain and SCI. Biography

J. Bronwen Moore, B.Sc.O.T., M.A., is an occupational therapist with 24 years of experience working in the fields of neurological rehabilitation and pain management. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Arts in Adult Education from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education. In her work with the Toronto Rehab Brain and Spinal Cord Living Engaged and Actively with Pain (LEAP) Service at the University Health Network, she supports people with neurological conditions and pain learn skills to self-manage their pain and find creative ways to do the activities that clients value the most. She holds an Adjunct Lecturer status appointment with the University of Toronto Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy. She has presented at numerous conferences about topics related to neurological rehabilitation and pain management. Bronwen’s research interests include pain self-management, healthcare worker self-care and resilience, and the role of the arts in healthcare.
