Abstract

Understanding current trends in epidemiology of traumatic spinal cord injury (tSCI) is the key to the development of effective prevention strategies and the projection of health care needs. This presentation analyzed data from the Spinal Cord Injury Model Systems (SCIMS) Database to document trends in demographic and injury characteristics of new tSCI over the last 5 decades. Particularly, we investigated whether the profile of new tSCI has changed in recent years in relation to sociopolitical events, such as the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, war in Ukraine, and economic hardship.
