Our Focus

Canada’s population is rapidly aging. The population of senior citizens – those age 65 and older – is expected to more than double over the next two decades. This demographic change will place great demands on the continuum of care. Research in the Aging Team at KITE is focused on devising solutions that can ease pressure on the health system, provide additional services and supports, and assist independent living and aging in place.

Our Goals

Addressing the needs of older adults and their caregivers.

Ongoing Studies

  • Advanced technologies for improving pain care in older adults with dementia
  • Ambient monitoring to frequently assess falling risk and reduce falls and fall related injuries in long-term-care
  • Preventing falls on icy surfaces with advanced winter footwear and training interventions
  • Understanding tripping risk on outdoor walkways through measurement of minimum foot clearance
  • Preventing pressure injuries
  • Developing standards for improving accessibility
  • Preventing back injuries in caregivers
  • Reactive balance training for improving safe mobility
  • Developing robotic prosthetic legs and exoskeletons for older adults
  • Investigating the link between asthma, sleep apnea and heart failure in older adult
  • Location tracking-based health status indices for clinical support (STICS)
  • Developing smart glasses to assist older adults with vision loss
  • Developing digital technologies to assess sleep apnea in older adults
